This is a very inexpensive way to check and clear codes you would normally have to spend big money for a shop to diagnose. If you have any mechanical ability at all and have a 96 or newer vehicle this is a great addition to your tool box. In my case my 96 corvette threw a check engine light after a cat back and cold air intake install, I was able to hook this up and see that it was an EGR issue... I cleared the code and if it comes back I will start replacing parts.
I bought this because my car's Check Engine light kept coming on. The annoying thing is, I knew what it kept saying the problem was, and the dealer agreed it wasn't an important issue (a slight incompatibility caused by having a generic replacement part and not a GM certified part). But, with that light constantly on, it would keep me from learning if something more serious ever occurred.
So, I got this for two reasons: a) to verify what code was being thrown by the computer, b) clear out the code if it's the one I already know about so that my light will turn off. This device works like a champ in these aspects; simple to find out what code is causing the problem, and a couple of button presses later and it's cleared out and the Check Engine light is off again. It also has a feature for showing you the status of each sensor in the system, so you know whether all the computer's sensors have run or not since you last cleared it out.
The package advertises as being able to diagnose a problem in under 29 seconds; I didn't time it, but it's still very fast, and also just as fast to clear the code if you do so. The manual lays out all the operations of the device and steps to use it in an easy to follow format; coupled with the device's simple interface, this device is very easy to use.
