AutoXray AX7000 Tech Scan Diagnostic Code Scanner with Live, Record and Playback Sensor Data Capability and SD Card Slot for Upgrades

Product Description

Amazon.com
Today's automobile is as much a product of the modern age as any personal computer. Wired with networks of on-board computers designed to optimize efficiency and proper functioning using standardized Onboard Diagnostics (OBDs), they churn out Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) intended to alert drivers and technicians of potential problems. Professional garages use expensive diagnostic scanners to decipher these codes, but there is another way to get the job done. AutoXray's AX7000 TechScan Diagnostic Scan Tool.

.
The AutoXray AX7000 offers all the benefits, accuracy and upgrade opportunities of a high-end diagnostic tool, with a price tag that both automotive professionals and serious do-it-yourselfers can afford. Loaded with easy to use diagnostic software, constructed of tough, gripable plastic and coming complete with a rugged carrying case, an assortment of color-coded, OBD-specific cables and a deep array of features, it is designed to put the ability to read, record and playback live sensor data, trouble codes and their definitions in the palm of your hand.
Diagnostics Right Out of the Box: OBD-I, OBD-II and BeyondThe AX7000 offers an extensive range of diagnostics possibilities, including access to diagnostic codes and datastreams ranging from GM, Ford and Chrysler OBD-I codes (1982 - 1995), all OBD-II enhanced codes (1996 and newer), GM, Ford and Chrysler enhanced OBD-II datastream (1996 - 2006) and enhanced OBD-II code commands for Toyota, Nissan and Honda models. In addition to this, the unit also ships loaded with software containing many other useful functions such as graph data (1984 - 1995), an acronym library, an O2 monitor test, extensive bi-directional test functionality, a diagnostic monitor test, the ability to print directly from the scanner via a USB cable, multiple feature launching through programmable hot keys and much more.
Upgrade Options: SD Memory Cards and the InternetToo often diagnostic tools are created with an overly narrow purpose, forcing consumers to buy a different tool for each job. As a reaction to this, the AX7000 was designed to offer something rarely seen in a tool in its price range, upgrade options both attractive and easy. First, to take advantage of its long history in the diagnostic tool industry, AutoXray has ensured that the AX7000 is Internet updatable, allowing AX7000 owners to both upload software shipped with previous AutoXray scanners for a nominal fee, as well as the latest versions of the AX7000 software. More importantly, the AX7000 SD memory card slot allows owners to upgrade their scanner with specific definitions, codes and datastreams as they are released. A regular release schedule of upgrades has been established for the near future which will include SD cards and any necessary cables. Through this groundbreaking release strategy, owners can customize their AX7000 tools with additional upgrades as they need them, without having to pay for unnecessary hardware or features.

Easy, affordable upgrades via the SD memory slot. Product Features:

I bought this tool because I needed both OBDI and OBDII capabilities for my cars. For my older pre-1996 OBDI cars this tool not only reads diagnostic trouble codes but also streams live powertrain data (PID) such as throttle position, rpm, manifold pressure, coolant temperature, closed vs open loop mode, oxygen sensor voltage swings, short and long term fuel trim, and so on. Most tools will show these data for OBDII but this tool also shows these data for OBDI, which sets this tool apart in my opinion. I am waiting for the add-on SD cards to be released so I can retrieve enhanced (manufacturer specific) data streams (PID) for my OBDII Honda, not just the EPA-mandated generic data streams. Even without the SD card it shows enhanced (manufacturer specific) diagnostic trouble codes and generic stream data for import vehicles. So I think this tool shows great promise in terms of flexibility and upgrade-ability, and it has performed well on my cars so far. The boot code and program firmware can be upgraded over the internet through a USB cable to the PC using the recently released "Scanning Suite" software, which can be downloaded at no additional cost. I had trouble updating the firmware at first, getting the message "cannot connect to device" and had to call the SPX helpline. They were extremely helpful and solved the problem. It turns out that after you put the tool into "program mode" in prepration for the firmware update, you need to press ENTER. That causes the tool to power down. Then when you turn it back on, it boots up in program mode and the firmware upgrade can proceed. The tool and assorted cables are sturdily built, and would stand up to professional use I would think. Successfully captures and displays approximately 40 frames of OBDII engine PID data from my Honda.
UPDATE: I assembled myself a new computer based on the Windows 7 64-bit operating system, and found that I can't update the scan tool using the Autoxray PC software "Scanning Suite" because they do not yet have 64-bit drivers. However, they told me they are working on this (maybe as part of updates to Scanning Suite?).
UPDATE Aug 27, 2011: AutoXray has canceled development of the HONDA enhanced OBD data flash card for this tool, which is dissappointing considering how many HONDAs are on the road. Bad business decision. And here it is almost September 2011 and AutoXray still has not released Scanning Suite drivers for Windows7 64-bit operating systems. SPX: This could be a great scan tool if you would only INVEST in it's development at the level it deserves.
UPDATE Jan 31, 2012: AutoXray has obviously abandoned this tool but they won't tell you that. They just want you to buy their remaining stock, but even at a discounted price it is not worth it because it has been made obsolete. Any mp3 player can communicate with Windows 7 64 bit operating system so what's the problem with SPX and this scan tool?

I purchased this unit as a mid-range priced scanner/code reader. I was disappoint with the unit and it was returned to Amazon.
Reasons:
- You can not print output from scanner as featured. Print option software has not been released by AutoXray
- There are no updates available past 2006 models for the base scanner or for the optional SD cards
- There is no printed manual with the unit. There is a quick-start guide but you most download the users manual from AutoXray's website. If you print it out it is a book!
I expected more out of SPX/AutoXray, disappointed with this product as currently supported.

Equus 3150 Innova ABS + Professional CanOBD2 Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDII Vehicles

Product Description

Amazon.com
Computers are an integral part of all modern vehicles, especially when it comes to determining necessary maintenance through on-board diagnostic (OBD) codes. The Innova 3150 CanOBD2 + ABS Diagnostic Code Scanner from Equus is an affordable and easy-to-use tool for any do-it-yourselfer or amateur mechanic who needs a quick and easy way to determine why the "Check Engine" light is illuminated on 1996 and newer cars, light trucks, mini-vans and foreign and domestic SUVs.

In addition to providing crucial OBD2 code information, the 3150 also features anti-lock Brake System (ABS) diagnostic functionality to troubleshoot problems with ABS solenoids, ABS pump motors, brake switches, control modules, speed sensors and more on most 1996 and newer GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles. If your car has either a check engine or ABS light on, you don't have to reach into your toolbox for two tools; the 3150 will do both jobs. Combine this with the unit's Internet connectivity for software updates and the ability to interface with your PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic ABS + diagnostic tool right in the palm of your hand.

All-in-One Screen and One-Push Button FunctionsHandheld diagnostic tools should put all the information a user needs right in the palm of your hand, but too often other models bury this data within the device, requiring you to navigate through multiple menus to find what you want. The 3150 in different. Using a combination of its patented all-in-one screen, that allows for viewing 25 pieces of vital information in three languages--English, French or Spanish--all at once without having to search through multiple menus, and single-button function access, users are guaranteed quick, efficient access to data they need.
Patented Emission Status LEDsOver 30 States now use an OBD2 based system to check for emissions readiness, making it more important than ever to be aware of the status of your vehicle and to keep it running in top condition. With this in mind the Innova 3150 has been designed with the ability to read the exact same emissions information as these state-required tests do to see if you will pass the first time around. Built around a simple color-coded system where Green = Pass, Yellow = Potential Problems and Red = Fail, users are able to quickly diagnose potential emission issues with the 3150. Other tool manufacturers charge over $100 for this feature alone and a separate tool has to be purchased, but the 3150 includes this with the price of purchase.
Additional Diagnostic Resources at Canobd2.comThe Equus Innova 3150 also comes with access to RepairSolutions through canobd2.com. RepairSolutions allows users to take control of vehicle diagnostics by providing you with the complete solution as to why your "Check Engine" light is on. A basic report is provided free with your scanner purchase, with a comprehensive analysis available for additional purchase.

Customer Reviews

Long story short. Got my new 3150 at a great price. Hooked it to GM vehicle and it came back with C0040. Scantool says Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Subfault. I end up replacing not one, but both hubs. ($280) Light still on, scan still says C0040. I search the web and find out that C0040 means Right Front Sensor. $140 more dollars. I call Innova tech line to complain. Guys says the code C0040 is for Rear Wheel Blah, Blah. No, its not, but the tool and the website they have says it is. He had no idea when the site would be updated, or a release to update the 3150. Its been over a week and if you search Innova's site for C0040 it still says Rear! Update: The website has been updated. There is no online updates for the 3150, but I can live with it, I'll just doublecheck the codes against other sites.

I bought the 3150 to diagnose an emmissions problem on a 97 camry and it worked great for that, however when I went to check on the abs system it stated that it wasn`t supported, reading the information on the box after the fact I realized that the abs diagnostics support very few vehicles and none of mine, 2001 dodge ram, 2009 hyundai sonota, 2001 honda civic. So do your homework before you purchase the 3150 for the abs feature.

Actron CP9575 Auto Scanner Trilingual OBDII and CAN Scan Tool

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Actron CP9575 OBD-II and CAN AutoScanner Scan Tool is the next generation of automotive diagnostic scan tools. CAN protocol compliant, not only does it read and display generic and manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and definitions on-screen, but it also comes loaded with advanced features rare in a tool in its price range. These include live real-time data, 6 modes of OBD-II data, trilingual support, freeze frame data, state OBD check (emissions), drive cycle mode and more.

Generic and Manufacturer Codes and Definition On-screenSince the 1980's standardized Onboard Diagnostic systems—first OBD-I and currently OBD-II—mandated for virtually all cars and light trucks manufactured for the US market have provided automotive technicians with insight into the increasingly complex inner workings of modern passenger vehicles. Professional technicians utilize large, expensive diagnostic tools to translate the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and other data generated by the internal computer networks of in your vehicle when the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on your dashboard goes off. The cost for this is passed on to you by your mechanic, but mid-level to advanced do-it-yourselfers (DIY) can now gain access to this information and much of the functionality for a fraction of the cost of a visit to the service center with the Actron CP9575 AutoScanner Scan Tool.

Generic and manufacturer codes an definitions on-screen..
Additional professional features..
Slim and Internet updateable.. With Actron CP9575 AutoScanner Scan Tool DIYers who want to know detailed information about their vehicle's condition can instantly and affordably gain access to both generic and manufacturer-specific OBD-II codes generated by their vehicles and their respective code definition, all on the unit's easy to read backlit screen. These codes can be easily navigated through using a single hand with the patented one-touch read and erase buttons both during normal use parameters of their vehicle and in the event of an MIL event. Designed for ease of use, the CP9575 is CAN compliant (an important OBD-II computer protocol), utilizes a standard 16-pin OBD-II connector and features a cable permanently connected to the unit. CAN functionality allows the CP9575 to interact with and sample data from the different diagnostic subsystems within your vehicle, while the standard pin layout and permanent orientation of the cable ensures that you will always be able connect to your vehicle's data link connector (DLC), the OBD-II input port usually located underneath your dashboard. Along with this, the unit's rugged construction, ability to power itself directly through the OBD-II cable and portable size mean that it can be stored and taken anywhere.
Professional Scan Tool Features at a Code Reader PriceIn addition to displaying DTCs and their definitions, the Actron CP9575 also provides access to an impressive list of additional functionality that allows for more advanced analysis of data produced by your vehicle. Some of these prominent features include the reading and display of "freeze frame" data, which is a snapshot of the overall sensor readings from your vehicle's central computer at the time of a MIL event; access to the VIN (vehicle ID number), CVN and Cal ID; and the display of the status of your vehicle's inspection and maintenance (I/M) monitors, whose proper working is pivotal to a vehicle passing state mandated emissions tests. Add to this even more productive and convenience features like the access to live engine data, the ability to check fixes within your vehicle by displaying OBD-II Drive Cycle Mode, Internet updatability of codes, definitions and software and language support in English, Spanish and French, and the Actron CP9575 AutoScanner Scan Tool quickly distinguishes itself as a must-have tool that will easily pay for itself in maintenance costs saved.

Customer Reviews

What a great product . Pulls codes quickly with a modest description of code. In addition, it shows various sensor data(rpm, voltage, positions, temps, loads, etc...)and other various on board data that would normally require you to go to a professional shop for. I bought this actron since I was having a problem with my rear O2 sensor in one of my vehicles, which was consistently pulling 2 codes for that sensor. Initially i was resetting it hoping it was a glitch, since i wasn't in any mood to buy a rear O2 ; lift the car to replace it. Well luckily with the scanner, i observed that the voltages were stagnant under all conditions. Now this was strange since the voltages dictate the exhaust temperature. The front O2 was showing varying voltages under different loads. well, to make a long story short it turns out that the sensor wiring was frayed requiring an easy splice.
The advantage of knowing on board sensor data is far better than just pulling codes... My recommendation, if you don't mind getting you hands dirty, spend a few extra bucks and get a model that can pull live sensor data like this model. Plus, it's a great show and tell for all you car buddies.
As for updating data via PC, i have yet try that.

Works no every car I tried it on 1996 HHR, 1997 Dodge Caraven, 2008 Honda Civic, 2006 Ford Mustang GT, 1996 VW Jetta. Connected in a timely manner and read the codes no problem. The live data feature separates it from a basic reader and is very useful to diagnose how the engine is is functioning.
Bottom line is it's worth the money and it does what it claims, as advertised.

Equus 3140 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDI and OBDII Vehicles

Product Description

Amazon.com
The Innova 3140 Dignostic Code Scanner is an enhanced scan tool that is loaded with many professional features. If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Innova has added to the 3140. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand.
As government agencies establish more stringent emission laws, vehicles continue to become more sophisticated for maintenance and repairs, forcing professional mechanics, DIYers, and consumers alike to find easy-to-use tools for diagnosing their vehicles. Many tools have already been developed to access these powerful on-board vehicle computers, but the Innova tool is particularly simple to use and surprisingly affordable. It is designed to be used by almost anyone, from the weekend mechanic to the ASE master technician. The 3140 Diagnostic Code Scanner can retrieve diagnostic codes in all OBD II (1996 and newer) and some of the most popular OBD I (1982 to 1995) vehicles. The scanner features a unique, patented all-in-one LCD screen that shows 25 parameters at once without the need to scroll through time consuming menus. Separate LED indicators located below the screen provide quick OBD I/M emissions checks; so you'll know if you're ready to pass those ever-increasingly stringent laws. Innova built the 3140 to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. This device can store diagnostic codes in its memory for off-car review and analysis. Additionally, you can connect the 3140 to your PC with the included cables and software to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports--and even update the scanner via the Internet. The 3140 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). In addition, the tool provides live data (view, record, and playback live PCM data streams), bi-directional testing, vehicle ID capture, and O2 sensor results. The Innova 3140 can also perform diagnostic scans for the following OBD I vehicles:
  • General Motors: all 1982-1993, and some 1994-1995 models
  • Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury: 1983-1995 models with EEC-IV systems (KOEO, KOER, timing check, cylinder balance test, output state test, and wiggle test)
  • Toyota/Lexus: 1991-1995
  • Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth: 1984-1995
  • Jeep: 1993-1995

All-in-One Screen and One-Push Button Functions
Handheld diagnostic tools should put all the information a user needs right in the palm of your hand, but too often other models bury this data within the device, requiring you to navigate through multiple menus to find what you want. The 3140 is different. Using a combination of its patented all-in-one screen, that allows for viewing 25 pieces of vital information in three languages--English, French or Spanish--all at once without having to search through multiple menus, and single-button function access, users are guaranteed quick, efficient access to data they need.
Patented Emission Status LEDs
Over 30 States now use an OBD2 based system to check for emissions readiness, making it more important than ever to be aware of the status of your vehicle and to keep it running in top condition. With this in mind, the Innova 3140 has been designed with the ability to read the exact same emission information as these state-required tests do to see if you will pass the first time around. Built around a simple color-coded system where Green = Pass, Yellow = Potential Problems and Red = Fail, users are able to quickly diagnose potential emission issues with the 3140. Other tool manufacturers charge over $100 for this feature alone and a separate tool has to be purchased, but the 3140 includes this with the price of purchase.
Additional Diagnostic Resources at Innova.com
The Innova 3140 also comes with access to RepairSolutions through Innova.com. RepairSolutions allows users to take control of vehicle diagnostics by providing you with the complete solution as to why your "Check Engine" light is on. A basic report is provided free with your tool purchase, with a comprehensive analysis available for additional purchase.

Customer Reviews

I've been working on cars a while now and I've used a few of these type of code readers/scanners (Snap-on and Mac) and I've found that this one does almost everything you would expect a pro model to do and a price that can't be beat. Shows everything you really need to know, the screen is very large and easy to read, the button layout is good, but can be confusing at first, there should have been an extra button or two as some of the controls do double or triple duty, you have to read the manual and have it on hand until you get used to the controls. I've used it right away to diagnose a problem in my late model truck and have plugged it in to a number of makes and models with great success. It's results are almost as detailed as say the Snap-on, but it costs 1/10 the price! The included software is nice, but not as full featured as it should be in saving data results. I highly recommend doing a firmware update to the unit, mine shipped with firmware 1.0 and the new firmware v2 adds some extra diagnostic functions, such as advanced DTC codes for some makes and updates the DTC code library in the unit, the unit seemed to read live data faster as well. Being able to read OBD I codes is a plus, but there are many limitations on the makes and models, a glaring omission is the lack of Nissan OBD I (Just because I own a older Nissan!). I do all my own repairs and would highly recommend this unit. The unit comes with two nylon cases, one for the unit, OBD II cable, manual and the other for pc serial cable and OBD I adapters and the cases zip together for easy transport. I do have one big complaint, this is 2007, who uses serial connectors anymore? my laptop does not even have one, I have to go out and buy a serial to USB2.0 adapter, it works well and the unit synced fine with my laptop with the adapter, but you would figure that they would have put the serial connector to rest by now.

My 3140 arrived with PC_SOFTWARE 1.32, and FIRMWARE 1.01
To update:
Install the software from the CD onto your computer, connect the tool to the PC, and turn on the tool. A "USB Serial Adapter" such as Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter ( USA-19HS ) makes this much easier.
Select "Update" from the PC software menu --- and it will say a PC_SOFTWARE update is available, but your hardware is "up to date".
Download the new PC software (17 mb file), install, and run it.
Hit "Update" again now, and it will say that a FIRMWARE update is available. Download the new 'BIN' file (2 mb), and install it in the tool as outlined in the directions.
Currently I have PC_SOFTWARE 1.33, and FIRMWARE 1.02

this is one of the best Bluetooth that I ever use I try the other brand and didn't work so I can tell you this one work great with torque so if you want to use toque get this one

Works great with my Android phone and Torque as advertised. I did try to use it with my wife's Iphone as well but apparently it is not compatible with the Iphone. I did some research and apparently a WiFi reader is need rather than a Bluetooth one for the Iphone. Hope that bit of advise helps somebody out.
Received this just in time as the check engine light in my Ford F150 had been on for a while and it finally died the day this arrived, come to find out it was a simple sensor that needed replacing so it worked great for that.
I was a bit concerned that it mat not work on my Ford as I had seen reviews on similar products that stated theirs did not work on Ford however the description of this clearly states it works with Fords so I figured I would give it a shot and I was not disappointed!
It did take me a second to get it paired up properly with the phone program but with the included instructions I had it figured out pretty quick. The product also came with contact info for the manufacturer in the event there were any problems setting it up.
Very pleased.

Actron CP9550 Pocket Scan Plus CAN Diagnostic Code Reader for OBDII Vehicles

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Actron CP9550 OBD-II PocketScan Plus is the most advanced, powerful and compact automotive diagnostic trouble code (DTCs) reader available, but DTC's and descriptions are just a start of the tasks it can handle. The CP9550 PocketScan is CAN (controller area network) compliant and provides freeze frame data, VIN info and performs the important task of (I/M) Inspection Maintenance-readiness testing by displaying the I/M readiness monitor status. Great for use before and after repairs are made, its small size makes it perfect for easy storage and use.

Advanced and Compact OBD-II DiagnosticsSince the 1980's standardized Onboard Diagnostic systems—first OBD-I and currently OBD-II—mandated for virtually all cars and light trucks have provided automotive technicians with insight into the increasingly complex inner workings of modern passenger vehicles. On the other hand, most consumers are totally unaware of these systems, with the only indication that there may be a problem with their vehicle coming to their attention when "check engine"/malfunction indicator light (MIL) is illuminated on the dashboard. Professional technicians utilize large, expensive diagnostic tools to translate the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) generated by the internal computer networks of in your vehicle in these events. The cost for this is passed on to you by your mechanic whether you understand the reason/mechanism or not, but entry-level do-it-yourselfers (DIY) do not have to be left in the dark.

Codes and definition on-screen..
Additional, affordable, advanced info in-hand.. With Actron's CP9550 OBD-II PocketScan Plus DIYers can instantly and inexpensively gain access to the generic OBD-II codes generated by their vehicles that indicate a vast amount of valuable diagnostic information. These generic codes can be read easily with the patented one-touch read and erase buttons both during normal use parameters of their vehicle and in the event of an MIL event, with their definitions available on-screen. Designed for ease of use, the CP9550 is CAN compliant (an important OBD-II computer protocol), utilizes a standard 16-pin OBD-II connector and features a cable permanently connected to the unit. CAN functionality allows the CP9550 to interact with the different diagnostic subsystems within your vehicle. The standard pin layout and permanent orientation of the cable ensures that you will always be able connect to your vehicle's data link connector (DLC), the OBD-II input port usually located underneath your dashboard, and the unit's rugged construction and small size mean that it can be stored and taken anywhere. In addition to code reading the Actron CP9550 also provides access to more advanced vehicle information. These include the reading and display of "freeze frame" data, which is a snapshot of the overall sensor readings from your vehicle's central computer at the time of a MIL event; access to the VIN (vehicle ID number); and the status of your vehicle's inspection and maintenance (I/M) monitors, whose proper working is pivotal to a vehicle passing state mandated emissions tests.
Standard Features:
  • Compatible with ALL 1996 and newer vehicles (OBD-II ; CAN).
  • Automatically reads DTCs when connected for fast diagnostics.
  • Displays OBD-II generic code definitions.
  • Reads, displays and erases DTCs.
  • Reads and displays MIL (malfunction indicator light) status.
  • Reads and displays I/M monitors.
  • Reads and displays pending codes.
  • Reads and displays freeze frame data.
  • Reads and displays VIN (easy way to check vehicle ID number).
  • Easy to read backlit display.
  • Effortlessly powered by car battery through the 16-pin OBD-II connector.

I have 4 vehicles from a '98 to an '07 and have used this to check codes on 3 of them already including the '07 that had a cylinder 3 misfire upon purchase a month ago. There was a wrong spark plug installed prior to my purchase. If I had taken the car to a garage, I would have paid the purchase price of this code reader for the diagnosis alone. I changed all 4 plugs myself for $26. I recommend every car owner to own a code reader. They are basically plug 'n' play nowadays and will pay for themselves in 1 use. This reader read my ('07 Solstice, '98 F150, '00 Elantra and a Windstar work van of unknown year) codes straight out of the box....Highly recommended

I was a bit sceptical when I saw this for sale, but took a chance (price was right). This little scanner did everything it was adversited to do an quickly. I like the size too. It fits in the glove compartment ready to use if needed. I gave me the right code, bought the part and fixed it myself (oxygen sensor). But it!

Equus 3160 Innova ABS + Professional CanOBD2 Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDII Vehicles with Back-lit Screen and Enhanced Live Data

Customer Reviews

The 3160 is a very useful tool if you have the right vehicle. It provides generic codes and more from many makes but on European, Korean or Swedish vehicles dont expect much more than the generic codes.
I did not research tool enough to realize nearly all of the "adavanced DTC" functions are for Chrysler/Jeep, Ford/Mazda,GM/Isuzu, Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus vehicles only. The sales verbiage DOES explain the limitations of the ABS testing to certain makes/models but DOES NOT provide the information that the tools enchanced DTC functions share the same vehicle limitations.
The enchanced functions are described in the owners manual as:
"The "enhanced" mode provides the ability to retrieve enhanced DTCs from most Chrysler/Jeep, Ford/Mazda,GM/Isuzu, Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus vehicles. The types of enhanced data available depends on the vehicle make."
"You can also retrieve Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) DTCs. ABS DTCs are available for Chrysler/Jeep, Ford and GM vehicles only."
The included software tool OBD PC Link functions but is clunky at best. I could not locate any documentation on this software's features or operation. The 3160 tool still uses a serial port for communications but most PCs being sold no longer include a serial port only USB. It will require an USB to Serial converter if you do not have a serial port on your PC. The live data capture will display in the OBD PC Link software screen and is useful. The report writing function is generic at best.
I tried to update the 3160 internal software from the OBD PC Link main screen and received a message box telling me to download the latest 3130 software. No instructions on where to get software or how just..... download the latest 3130 software.
Since I own vehicles from Audi, Mercedes, Saab, GM, Chrysler, Lincoln, Suzuki and Hyundai it is still useful and has provided reliable data on the vehicles I have tested it on but it would be a more useful tool if enchanced dtc information was available on all makes.
The 3160 does a good job as a code reader and diagnostic tool for the home mechanic. The DTC codes are specific to vehicle make and so far have been accurate pointing to the problem I introduced to check out the tools operation. BUT I want point out possible issues for other buyers like the lack of enhanced coverage mentioned. If you own a European, Korean or Swedish vehicle this tool does not provide everything listed in the sales verbiage.
Update: 08-17-10
I went to test a Yukon with the 3160 today and the display is garbled and unreadable. Technical support confirms unit is broken. less than 9 months old. Sending in for warranty repair and will update when received back.
Update 09-07-10
I paid to ship unit back to Innova and they paid return shipping. I received it today so it took a some days to get back and it appears it is my unit repaired but since units do not have a serial sticker I can not be sure. I tested it a bit, it seems ok. Hope it continues to work.

What do cats have to do with code scanners?
In my case, cats crawled under the hood of my 2007 Silverado Classic pickup and kept the engine filthy. They also pulled at various wires under the hood. Those two things mean problems for any vehicle, but acutely for my Silverado - as I had to repeatedly wash the filth away the cats left under the hood. The Silverado 4.8 engine for 2007 has knock sensors in the intake valley, and engine washing causes water to damage them by puddling under the intake. With only 6,000 miles in four years, my engine light came on. Turns out the knock sensor problem with water is common. I just wouldn't have had it sans the cats.
I went to my local Auto Zone and they kindly used a scan tool to diagnose a problem with the 2 bank knock sensor (rear - low output) code P0332. I asked about the various scanners they had, but none were all that comprehensive and I had no intention of paying thousands for an OBD2 code scanner that would be more intensive. I did know I needed one as all new vehicles use this Federally Mandated Standard - and I knew cats or something would be setting off more codes, sooner or later, to turn my engine warning lights on again. What I found was the Equus 3160 was capable of handling more than any other scanner on the market in the $400 price range - only for just $200.
My first trial of the unit was on my new Lincoln - I had to have the air conditioning repaired on it this past summer. The scanner found the code left behind, after the repair, for air conditioning "fast cycling". Long since repaired under warranty, this was no problem, and no other problems were found (like pending codes that don't turn on the engine light in the dash). So, I erased the temporary memory in my Lincoln. The 3160 also allowed me to do full diagnostics on every sensor in my Lincoln with the engine running. I found that quite impressive as I could hear the testing - as the unit took over control of the systems. Of course, the erase had reset the computer, so some modules had to reset after a drive - and the computer had to re-learn all the optimal fuel and shift settings while in operation. During the drive, I noticed the car's improvement as it re-learned optimal settings. I also like the complete listing of systems displayed in the "real time screens" as accessed by the DTC and LD buttons. Once the drive was over, the 3160 also showed the vehicle estimated emissions status as green again at the three LEDs for this - a nice added feature that gives more peace of mind. ABS functions were also fully covered and checked using the 3160 on my Lincoln. Again, no problems with my Lincoln.
My second trial was back to my original problem vehicle - the Silverado. I put the 3160 through all of its capabilities again. This time, I saw ABS tests were un-available - no problem as the ABS dash light wasn't glowing to indicate any problem there. The P0332 code had come up immediately, and I also noticed the 3160 displayed a full screen of information at the current time the code had set - from the Silverado's flash memory. It showed the vehicle speed had been 64 mph at just over 1600 RPMs and a wealth of other data. I erased the data and proceeded to watch the lists at the "live data" and "custom data" screens with the engine running. Before long, I again saw the P0332 code set again.
Okay, that code doesn't necessarily mean a tear down is imminent for repair, as the knock sensor and wiring to the PCM (powertrain control module) need to be checked first. An ohms check showed my sensor out of range - so the intake has to come off, and the wiring and/or knock sensor needs replacement. If badly corroded from water, I'll replace both sensors and the wiring - no need to take chances. But this time, my knock sensors will be sealed like GM should have done from the start. This estimated repair is around $500, so I can repair the engine myself for $180 in parts. I can also check my repair using the 3160 when finished - to be sure everything is correct. Total savings: $320 - not counting my labor, and I now own a very reliable scanner I can use anytime to quickly diagnose problems on any of the 1996 up OBD2 vehicle models.
Then there is the 3160 software disk. I loaded it to two computers using Vista X64 Ultimate. It loaded easily and properly. You can get detailed information using it Online, such as TSBs and vehicle recalls - and detailed repair operations along with estimated repair costs by area code. On one of my computers, I could not use the PC connect cable provided with the 3160. This was no problem with the other - which had the needed male D-sub connector for the 3160 provided nine-pin female D-sub connector. Purchasing an additional D-sub to USB adapter cable will soon eliminate that problem.
The 3160 comes with a decent manual for learning the use of the tool, but operation is really simple. Just plug it into the vehicle connector with the engine and key off, and it turns on. The manual will also explain any problems you could encounter. It then prompts what to do next from its screen. The screen is well lit and there are adjustments for screen brightness, language, DTC library, and the desired unit of measurements. I managed to freeze one screen in "advanced diagnostics" with the GM vehicle running, but I just turned the engine and switch off, disconnected the cable, and removed one of the three provided AA alkaline batteries. When I reconnected everything, the test performed properly - and I tried it several times more, to be sure all was fine, and couldn't re-create the problem. As the frozen screen didn't occur again, I think the problem was really just a temporary glitch with my Silverado's computer - it did have the malfunction code showing at the time, and was registering its own data from engine components at the same time the screen freeze occured.
The unit basically looks like a huge brick of a cellphone and is about the weight of some cellphones from late 1990 to early 2001 or so. The carry case is nice, but I wouldn't recommend dropping the 3160 while in the case or out. It looks fairly durable, but no more so than most cellphones. So, treat it with care. I also would remove the batteries if the unit will see infrequent use. Cable connectors are standard computer types and are very well made. I'm almost 60 and had no problem using this tool, and the roughly two and a half inch screen was easily ready by my old eyes. I have an extensive background in electronics, and a long past history in racing I haven't pursued in many years. I do, however, have a fully equipped garage - so repairs to my vehicles, by myself, are not out of the question. My 3160 has made a nice addition that will see infrequent use as needed. I have no doubt it will be well appreciated in my usage, or by many of those working in the field.
(chuckle) Too bad the scanner can't run off cats, but it sure ferrets out bugs. One star off for high prices period. The scanner offers good performance, but you may want to purchase an additional good vehicle specific repair manual (such as Chiltons or Haynes) in preference to studying repair procedures Online.
